Alum Étienne Morin Drafted to the NHL

06/29/2023

Congratulations to alum Étienne Morin, who was selected by the Calgary Flames in the 2nd round, 48th overall in the 2023 NHL Entry Draft!

Étienne is our 7th alumni to be drafted to the NHL!

Étienne, at 6’0 and 183 pounds is a mobile, two-way defenseman who excels in the offensive zone with his vision and creativity. He has a hard, accurate shot and is great at finding lanes to get it to the net from the blueline. Étienne projects as a top four defenseman who will see time on the power-play.

Étienne just completed his second season for the Moncton Wildcats of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League where he was among the statistical leaders on his team and in the entire league. Here’s a list of some of his accomplishments.

  • Led his team in assists (51) and tied for the lead in points (72) during the regular season
  • Led his team in shots on goal (213)
  • Had the 4thmost shots on goal among defensemen in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League
  • Led the QMJHL in goals by a defenseman (21) and finished 3rdin points (72) in the regular season
  • Had the second most points among first-year draft eligible defensemen in the entire Canadian Hockey League (QMJHL, OHL, WHL)
  • Played in the CHL Top Prospects Game
  • Led his team in playoff scoring with 17 points in 12 games

A truly incredible season for Étienne! You can view some of his highlights here.

“On behalf of everyone at CIHA, we are extremely proud of what Étienne has accomplished for himself and for everything he has worked for, it is well deserved,” said CIHA Hockey Director and Étienne’s Head Coach, Andre Savage. “Étienne is a remarkable individual and proved he was a talented hockey player when he was at CIHA.”

Étienne’s first season at CIHA was in 2019-2020. A 2005 birth year, Étienne would have normally played with the U15 age group but received special permission to play a year ahead in the Hockey Eastern Ontario U18 AAA league. Competing against skaters as much as four years older than him, Étienne proved he belonged, putting up 10 goals and 14 assists in 44 games. He was tied for the lead in goals and 3rd in points among rookie defenseman, while also finishing 9th in scoring among all defenseman.

The 2020-2021 season was cancelled due to COVID-19 but our program put together a schedule that included practices, scrimmages, outdoor rink practices and off-ice workouts indoors and out as we navigated the ever changing provincial guidelines. This allowed our student-athletes, including Étienne to continue to develop their skills despite the unfortunate circumstances.

That summer, the Moncton Wildcats selected Étienne in the 2nd round, 21st overall in the QMJHL Draft. He had a very strong rookie season in 2021-2022 with 33 points in 64 games, which led the league among 2005 born defensemen and parlayed that into an even better year this season.

Étienne has a busy summer ahead of him with the Calgary Flames Development Camp shortly after the draft, a possible invite to the Canadian World Junior Selection Camp, Training Camp with the Flames and then back to Moncton for Training Camp.

Étienne joins fellow alumni Manix Landry (139th overall, 2021), Donovan Sebrango (63rd overall, 2020), Dylan Peterson (86th overall, 2020), Semyon Der-Arguchintsev (76th overall, 2018), Jasper Weatherby (102nd overall, 2018), and Gabriel Vilardi (11th overall, 2017) who have been drafted to the NHL.

We wish Étienne all the best in the next chapter of his career and we know his future will be bright!
